The new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup hits the Track

Porsche and motorsports go hand-in-hand. The German automaker has seen its sports cars compete in virtually every kind of racing all over the world and achieve great success. One of the most successful and popular race cars from Porsche has been the 911 GT3 Cup that continues to compete on a global scale. After seeing 2,395 units produced since 1998, the automaker has unveiled the next step for the platform with the new 911 GT3 Cup (991).

The new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car is based on the all-new 991-generation chassis that is slower, sleeker, wider, and better in virtually every aspect when it comes to performance than its predecessor. Sitting above that rear axle is a new 3.8-liter flat-six engine that churns out a healthy dose of 460 horsepower through a six-speed dog-style gearbox with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

All of your favorite motorsports goodies are worn on the exterior of the new GT3 Cup. A large rear spoiler generates a big chunk of downforce and is balanced out by a rear diffuser and front spoiler for balanced handling dynamics. Even the fenders protrude to cover the extended front and rear axles. The added with comes from new Michelin racing slicks that are a total of 27- and 31-cm wide at the front and rear, and new center-locking, single-piece aluminum race wheels developed by Porsche Motorsport that measure 10.5 x 18.0 up front and 12.0 x 18.0 at the rear.

But that’s not all as far as the fun stuff goes. The chassis benefits from a new race braking system that utilizes steel 380 mm slotted and internally-vented discs up front with six-piston aluminum fixed calipers and four-piston units at the rear for unrelenting stopping power on the race track.

While performance was the name of the game with Porsche on the new 911 GT3 Cup, driver safety was also a big concern. A newly designed roll cage was developed and provides a safety net around the driver along with a newly designed seat with added head and neck padding that can be tailored to different drivers. An innovative rescue hatch was also installed on the roof so that rescue teams can extract the driver or administer medical attention in the case of an accident. Porsche Custom Wheels

Porsche will build the new 911 GT3 Cup (991) Stuttgart- Zuffenhausen on the same factory production line as the road-legal 911. After final production, each car will be tested by a factory race driver before it is sent to customers with a price tag of 181,200 Euro plus country-specific tax.

When Porsche entered the SUV game with its first-generation Cayenne model, it upset quite a few enthusiasts around the world. How could a sports car company produce an SUV? Blasphemy! While that debate still rages on to this day among Porsche purists, there’s no question that the Cayenne has some serious performance – especially the Turbo S model.

Now in its third generation, the Porsche Cayenne has enjoyed a great deal of sales success. The new Porsche Cayenne Turbo S is looking to build upon that success but this time with a bit more snarl than your average German SUV.

 

Underneath the hood of the new Cayenne Turbo S sits a 4.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, similar to those found in the Cayenne Turbo and Panamera Turbo models. But this engine is a bit different in the fact that Porsche was able to squeeze out an additional 50 horsepower and 37 lb-ft. of torque thanks to some of that German engineering magic. This pushes the total output of the Turbo S to 550 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 553 lb-ft. of torque from 2,250 to 4,500 RPM. All of those ponies are sent through an eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission to all four wheels and shoots the SUV to 60 mph in a mere 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 175 mph as Porsche Traction Management works to prevent the tires from losing grip.

 

So what good is all that power without that Porsche sports car chassis? Well, the new Cayenne Turbo S is no pig when it comes to the turns thanks to the host of standard electronic aids and already sharp suspension setup. The SUV’s air suspension automatically adjusts to different driving styles thanks to Porsche Active Suspension Management and keeps things glued to the road with Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus and its rear differential lock. A standard Porsche Dyanmic Chassis Control helps utilize active roll bars to stabilize the suspension through turns and eliminate a great deal of body roll that plagues most SUVs and crossovers.

 

Bringing this hulking powerhouse to a halt is a set of gigantic 15.4-inch front and 14.1-inch rear brake discs clenched by unrelenting calipers. But if owners want even more stopping power, they can check the box next to the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes for lightweight and fade free braking performance.

 

The exterior of the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo S also has a bit of a harder edge than its siblings. New gloss black front air inlets help to redirect cool air to the two snails feeding boost pressure to the engine and the large set of front brakes. A new set of Porsche Dynamic Lighting System Bi-Xenon headlights give drivers better nighttime visibility thanks to its adjustable light range and feature matching gloss black housing. The standard 21-inch Turbo II wheels as featured on other Porsche models come standard, but COR Wheels can change that with a set of their own Porsche Cayenne wheels. The final touch is the “Turbo S” badge on the rear lift gate to differentiate the SUV from the rest of the lineup.

The interior features custom-tailored luxury that complements the turbocharged performance of the SUV. Owners will have two standard choices of leather color combinations with contrasting stitching along with alcantara accents throughout the cabin. Embroidered floor mats, illuminated stainless steel door entry sills, a unique dashboard plaque, and carbon fiber trim set help to make the cabin an exciting yet comfortable place to be.

Porsche hasn’t officially announced the MSRP of its new Cayenne Turbo S model, but it has said that deliveries will start in January of 2013. We’re guessing that it will cost a bit more than the Cayenne Turbo’s $108,750 price, think $120,000.

Nissan GT-R Featuring COR Encor Forged Wheels

The Nissan GT-R rocked the super car world with unrivaled performance and a Nürburgring lap time that blew the competition out of the water. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 loses its Top

Chevrolet’s most powerful convertible ever.

The fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro was at the forefront of the muscle car revival in Detroit. The Camaro’s fresh, modern design and classic rear-wheel drive V-8 formula effectively brought the car out from hiding and into the spotlight. But Chevrolet didn’t stop there. A new Camaro ZL1 performance model was introduced for 2012 and now has lost its top to become the most powerful convertible Chevrolet has ever produced.

“The Camaro ZL1 convertible will be one of the most powerful and most capable, convertibles available at any price,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro Chief Engineer. “This is a car that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you drop the top – or hit the gas.”

The new Chevy Camaro ZL1 Convertible is powered by the same 6.2-liter supercharged “LSA” V-8 engine that the ZL1 coupe uses. The output for the supercharged V-8 is an incredible 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft. of torque, making a sub four-second 0-60 mph time easily within reach. Compared to other 2+2 super car convertibles such as the Porsche 911 Turbo S, Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG, Aston Martin DB9 Volante, and Ford Shelby GT500, the Camaro ZL1 convertible has at least 30 more horsepower than each model. This sets the ZL1 at the top of the super car convertible food chain.

Unlike most convertibles, the Camaro ZL1 doesn’t sacrifice handling for the sake of a cloth top. The car was originally engineered by Chevy to accommodate a convertible model; therefore numerous reinforcements were made to the chassis including a transmission support brace, underbody tunnel brace, front cross brace, rear underbody “V” brace, and tower-to-tower engine bay brace. Chevrolet also installed A-pillar hydroformed tubes, inner windshield reinforcement brackets, and rocker and front hinge reinforcements for all Camaro convertibles. The modifications made to the chassis and body of the ZL1 convertible make it similar in terms of stiffness and handling as the ZL1 coupe and reduce unwanted noise and vibrations.

The Camaro ZL1 convertible utilizes the latest chassis and suspension technology from GM to make it a superb handler. For the ZL1 convertible, Chevrolet uses its third-generation Magnetic Ride with twin-wire/dual-coil dampers on the front and rear axles. The system adjusts the damping levels at a rate of 1,000 times per second, which translates to one-inch of distance traveled at 60 mph. This ensures that the suspension is properly suited and responsive to any road conditions it may encounter. Also standard on the Camaro ZL1 convertible is GM Performance Traction Management, which integrates all of the electronic management systems to improve vehicle launches, cornering, and handling.

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 convertible will be sold as a 2013 model and be available for purchase in late 2012. The new ZL1 convertible will be presented at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Pricing has not been announced by General Motors.

The new 2012 Porsche 911 makes its Debut at Frankfurt

The legend lives on.

Since 1963, the Porsche 911 has been held atop a pedestal as the prototypical sports car. For 48 years, the 911 has held this distinction, and retains it with the newest 991-generation 911. The latest 911 doesn’t have some of the drastic changes of past such as the elimination of air-cooled engines in the 996 or the Tiptronic transmission and all-wheel drive of the 964, but still asserts itself as the quintessential sports car.

There are a few obvious changes to the typical Porsche and/or automotive enthusiast at first glance. The 991 911 sits lower, has a 100 mm longer wheelbase, has a sleeker look and stretched silhouette that is ends with a distinct rear. For the exterior design, Porsche kept the styling relatively conservative. Minor changes such as enlarged air intakes at the front with integrated LED light bars, a wider front track, and side mirrors positioned on the door instead of the A-pillar give the 991 a different face that the 997. The standard wheel choices also grow from 19- to 20 inches in diameter for improved aesthetics. The wide butt of the 911 is apparent more than ever and comes wearing new LED taillights in a thin, streamlined shape. If anything, it’s more of a nip and tuck than a full-on nose job.

Underneath the new sheet metal is an aluminum-steel construction that reduces weight by 99 lbs. over the 997. The new 2012 Carrera and Carrera S’s engines also sit a few inches forward to produce a more ideal weight distribution and better handling dynamics while preserving the rear-engined platform that the 911 is known for. The wider front and rear tracks help improve grip along with the revised suspension design, making the new 911 one of the most dynamic Porsche models currently available. On the Carrera S model, the new Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) is available. Under hard cornering, the system adjusts the wheels to ensure that the tires are always in the optimal position, resulting in higher lateral grip.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S models will be powered by new engines that boast greater fuel efficiency and emissions without sacrificing output. In fact, both engines are more powerful than the previous variants while being “greener”. Both engines utilize start/stop technology, thermal management, and energy recuperation systems to reduce fuel consumption. The standard Carrera will feature a 3.4-liter flat-six that churns out 350 horsepower and can accelerate to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds with PDK while returning 34 mpg imp (Euro cycle). The Carrera S will boast a 3.8-liter flat-six with 400 ponies and 32 mpg imp. (Euro cycle) and is capable of accelerating to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds with PDK and 3.9 with the optional Sport Plus package.

The standard transmission on both 911 models is a new seven-speed manual, something that will get every enthusiasts mouth watering. The state-of-the-art, lightning quick PDK seven-speed dual clutch transmission will be available as an option on both models and help return better fuel economy and acceleration than the manual transmission.

The same conservative design mindset that Porsche used on the exterior were carried over to the interior. The most drastic update is the center console. Traditionally, the center console has been low, almost at the knees of the driver and passenger. In the new 991 generation, Porsche has taken a page from their book of motorsports and raised the console so that the gear shifter is closer to the driver’s hands on the steering wheel. Towards the back of the console sit a number of buttons for functions such as the suspension settings. The usual three-gauge cluster with centrally-mounted tachometer faces the driver along with a new high-res multifunction screen.

The new 991 generation Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S models were unveiled at the 2011 IAA Frankfurt Auto Show. Both models are currently available for ordering from U.S. dealerships. Prices for the Carrera begin at $ 82,100 for the manual and $ 86,180 for PDK, while the Carrera S will start at $ 96,400 for the manual and $ 100,480 for PDK.

The Carbon fiber Lamborghini Sesto Elemento gets the green light

At the 2010 Paris Motor Show Lamborghini made a statement in the automotive industry; a statement that literally didn’t carry much weight. The introduction of the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento was the first time since the 1986 Lamborghini Countach Evoluzione that the Italian automaker built a car that weighed less than 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs.).

The Sesto Elemento Concept was well received by Lamborghini customers, fans, and the media. It showcased Lamborghini’s new design direction and dedication towards the research and production of lightweight materials such as carbon fiber. The supercar has a classic Italian wedge-shaped design with a modern technical twist, slicing through air with sharp edges and triangle features. The body of the Sesto Elemento is constructed from special carbon fiber made using nano-technology with microscopic crystals, and then covered with clear coat to create a glowing red shine. It was also a showcase of technology and lightweight composites that Lamborghini is currently developing ways to mass produce.

Carbon fiber and numerous other lightweight materials are used throughout the Sesto Elemento. The super car is built with a carbon fiber monocoque cell made using Forged Composite technology while the front frame, crash panels, exterior panels, and even propeller shaft, are made from Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). Even chassis components such as the control arms and wheels are made from the ultra-lightweight material to help bring the overall weight down to just 999 kg (2,197.8 lbs.). Lamborghini uses Pyrosic, a glass ceramic matrix composite, for the exhaust due to its low weight and 900-degree Celsius resistance.

Due to the extremely low weight, the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento is able to reach 62 mph in a mere 2.5 seconds. The mid-mounted powerplant making this possible is a 5.2-liter V-10 from the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera that sends 570 horsepower and 389 lb-ft. of torque to the lightweight all-wheel drive system. The 5.2-liter is lubricated by a dry-sump system which allowed Lamborghini to mount the engine lower, improving the center of gravity.

“The excellent feedback and the numerous requests we’ve had from our customers have really convinced us to embark on the challenge of producing a vehicle with unique characteristics,” said President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, Stephan Winkelmann. “We are proud that what a year ago was just a ‘technology demonstrator’ of future super sports cars, even though in working order, will become a small series reality. Only 20 units of the new Sesto Elemento super sports car will be produced, and will be destined only for track use. We’re planning to deliver the first cars at the beginning of 2013.”

The Lamborghini Sesto Elemento will be shown at the 2011 IAA in Frankfurt. Only 20 examples of the superlight model will be produced, the first of which will be received by customers in early 2013. Pricing has not been released.

The Aston Martin V12 Zagato gets ready for Frankfurt

A British and Italian supercar with a Nürburgring pedigree.

Back in May, Aston Martin created a stir in the automotive world with the unveiling of the new V12 Zagato. The car was originally a concept that was built in collaboration with the Italian design firm, Zagato, to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the DB4GT Zagato. Now, after winning awards and racing at the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race, Aston Martin will be bringing two racing versions of the V12 Zagato to the 2011 IAA International Auto Show in Frankfurt.

What started out as a concept idea to celebrate the original partnership between Aston Martin and Zagato has blossomed into the creation of a new supercar. The Aston Martin V12 Zagato made its public debut at the 2011 Villa D’Este Concours event in Italy to an excited crowd. The new supercar was so popular that it even took home the Design Award for the concept and prototype class. The enthusiasm and popularity surrounding the car grew exponentially and afterwards Aston Martin introduced a pair of racecars based on the original concept.

Nicknamed “Zig” (green) and “Zag” (red) by their racing teams, the V12 Zagatos were put to the test in two prominent races at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Each car was fitted with the full aerodynamic treatment sporting a front splitter, dive planes, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler. Both cars were first raced at the 53rd ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup VLN race to prepare for what would become the true showcase of their power and potential. On the 25th and 26th of June, Aston Martin raced “Zig” and “Zag” at the 39th ADAC Nürburgring 24 Hour endurance race, both finishing the race with a combined 230 laps and 3,700 miles total.

After the success at the grueling endurance race, Aston Martin gave the V12 Zagato the green light for production. Each car will be handcrafted in the marquee’s headquarters in Gaydon, England. Based on the V12 Vantage, the Aston Martin V12 Zagato features beautiful carbon fiber and aluminum bodywork in a classic Zagato design. The production models will be powered by the Aston Martin 6.0-liter V-12 engine producing 510 bhp and 420 lb-ft. of torque. The power will be sent through a six-speed manual transmission to the 19-inch forged wheels at the rear. The production Aston Martin V12 Zagato is capable of reaching 62 mph from rest in just 4.2 seconds and hitting a top speed of 190 mph.

The production Aston Martin V12 Zagato models will be available during the summer of 2012 for £ 330,000 (+/- 539,000 USD) and be strictly limited to 150 units. Aston Martin will feature the two racing versions, “Zig” and “Zag” at the 2011 International Auto Show in Frankfurt alongside the One-77, Virage, and Vantage S.

Ferrari takes the top off the 458 with the new Spider Model

The newest edition to the Ferrari lineup just took its top off down the streets of Maranello. The new Ferrari 458 Spider joins the ranks of the Italian super cars with innovative features, technology, and, of course, otherworldly performance. For the first time ever in a sports car in this segment, Ferrari has unveiled a new fully-retractable hard top.

Behind the cockpit sits the award-winning 4.5-liter V-8 engine producing 560 horsepower at screaming 9,000 RPM horsepower and 389 lb-ft. of torque at 6,000 RPM. All that power is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch paddle shift transmission and E-diff. To aid drivers, F1-Trac traction control and high performance ABS systems come standard. Customers can also choose to option their 458 Spider with forged wheels and racing seats for even better performance.

To say that the new Ferrari 458 Italia Spider is just a topless 458 is insensitive. Ferrari has reworked and redesigned many parts of the super car so that it provides the same thrilling drive that the Italian automaker is known for. Small aspects such as the accelerator pedal mapping, suspension damping, and the engine’s exhaust note have been tuned to create an exciting drive.

At first glance the Ferrari 458 Spider is truly a special convertible. Two buttresses protrude from the rear of the car and extend to the edge of the cockpit where air freely flows. Each buttress was designed to redirect cooling air into the engine intakes, clutch, and transmission oil radiators. But even more intriguing is the new patented Ferrari hard top. The innovative hard top reduces weight by 55 lbs. over a traditional folding soft top and deploys in just 14 seconds. Ferrari engineers developed a top that stows neatly inside a small space above the engine bay without affecting the overall aerodynamics and performance of the 458 Italia. The small storage area for the roof enabled designers to create a rear bench behind the two seats for luggage space. Another new innovation from Ferrari is the large adjustable wind stop. The wind stop slows the air moving inside the cockpit and allows for conversations at speeds up to 124 mph.

The new Ferrari 458 Italia Spider offers open top excitement and exhilarating Italian performance. Performance is not compromised with the top up or down and structural rigidity is not lost, making it one of the best open top sports cars available. Pricing and availability have not yet been released by the Italian automaker. The Ferrari 458 Italia Spider will make its official public debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Porsche Classic restores a 1973 911 T Coupe

Classic performance.

There’s something special about driving a classic car, especially when that classic car is a Porsche. A certain passion, enthusiasm, and sense of character are apparent behind the wheel of a vintage 911. As part of the new “Revive the Passion” project organized by the Porsche Club of America (PCA) and Porsche Classic, a 1973 911 T Coupe was found and restored, then raffled off to a lucky individual at the 2011 Porsche Parade in Savannah, Georgia.

The car was found in the Los Angeles area, bought, and presented to the Porsche Club of America at the 2010 Porsche Parade held in St. Charles, Illinois. The car was in a state of extreme disrepair and was also home to a birds nest. Much of the paint had peeled away, the headlights and windows were missing, and interior upholstery was ripped and cracked. The car was even wearing home-made parts from a previous owner’s careless attempt at repair. The history, owners, and service of the 911 T were all unknown. But under this horrendous state of decay was an iconic 911 with the soul of a sports car.

The 38 year old model was sent back to its original home in Stuttgart to be fully restored by the experts at Porsche Classic. 1973 was the last year for the F-model 911 from Porsche. It was powered by a 2.4-liter air-cooled horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine that produced 140 horsepower at 5,600 RPM. In terms of performance, the 911 T could reach a 127 mph top speed, which, for the day, was quite impressive. The narrow-bodied model was finished in a nostalgic combo of Silver Metallic paint and Black interior.

The project began in 2010 and took almost a year to complete. During the restoration process, Porsche provided fans with an in-depth look at the car’s progress with exclusive online pictures and videos. Every aspect of the car from the smallest screw to each of the Porsche wheels were handled and inspected by a Porsche Classic technician then either refurbished or replaced with an original or reproduction part along with documentation. The body and chassis of the Porsche 911 T Coupe was also treated to prevent corrosion and rust with modern techniques such as Electrophoretic dip coating. After the corrosion protection, the car was painted with multiple coats of water-based Silver Metallic paints for environmental safety. Completing the rebuild process were thorough performance and functionality tests that modern Porsches are subjected to in order to ensure the utmost in quality.

The newly restored car was raffled off amongst Porsche Club of America members at the Porsche Parade in Savannah, Georgia, and then presented to the owner. The total value of the restored 1973 911 T Coupe is unknown.
