BMW offering Performance Edition upgrades for 335i and 135i

More power for the turbo-six.

BMW has just introduced a new performance upgrade for the 2011 BMW 335i and 335 xDrive sedans for the USA market. Called the BMW Performance Edition, the new option will increase horsepower, torque, and acceleration for the turbocharged six-cylinder model.

The Performance Edition for the BMW 335i ensures that the sedan is the ultimate driving machine, subtly increasing power while adding special exterior enhancements and badging. Under the hood of the stock 335i /xDrive sedans lies a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine that is packed with tuning potential. Making 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft. stock, the car is no slouch and can accelerate to 60 mph in just 5.4 or 5.6 seconds depending on the transmission.

But for some customers this isn’t enough, which is why BMW has introduced the Performance Edition for the 335i/ xDrive sedans. Prior to purchase, customers of the 2011 models can check the “ZMZ” option box and receive a power upgrade that won’t void the warranty. The upgrade includes no additional engine components and increases output to 320 horsepower and 317/322 lb-ft. (manual/automatic), giving it the same power rating as the 335is. The extra 20 horses come thanks to an engine software optimization program that does not affect emissions or fuel consumption.

Packed with the added power from the Power Kit, the BMW 335i sedan can accelerate to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds (manual 335i); 0.2 seconds faster than the stock model. Acceleration from 50 to 75 mph also improves by half-a-second, making highway passing pure driving joy.

In addition to the Power Kit’s engine tuning software, models equipped with the BMW Performance Edition upgrade will be fitted with black BMW kidney grilles and a “Performance Edition” badge to set them apart from the rest of the 3-Series lineup.

Owners of the 135i will also be invited to the party. Current 135i and 335i owners will be able to purchase a Performance Edition as a retrofit kit from BMW dealerships. The 2011 BMW 335i/ xDrive Performance Edition option is available for the bargain price of just $550, but you better hurry, the upgrade is only available until the end of 2011. The retrofit purchase price for the current 335i and 135i will be announced in August of 2011.
